Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The bacteria can survive on dry inanimate surface for 1-3 days.

Spread of infection

  • sexual contact
  • non-sexual contact with body fluids or objects contaminated by the bacteria.

Incubation period

2 – 14 days

Symptoms

Incubation period is 2 to 5 days. However, overuse of antibiotics in recent years makes the symptoms relatively silent.

  • Men: frequent urination, stinging, a pus-like discharge and pain in the testicles.
  • Women: Less obvious or no symptom at all. Frequent urination, stinging; a small percentage of patients have abnormal, viscous vaginal discharge in yellow or green color.
  • Throat infection: Infected through oral sex, can cause sore throat.
  • Rectal infection: Infected through anal sex, can cause anal pain and itching, or abnormal discharge.
  • Eye infection: After gonorrhea has infected an eye, giving rise to pain, swelling and red eye symptoms.

What are the complications without treatment?

  • Men: prostatitis, seminal vesiculitis, inflammating vas deferens, epididymitis and ospiritis.
  • Women: salpingitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility
  • Pregnant women: eyes of a new born baby may get infected during delivery, blindness is possible.
  • Systemic involvement can cause arthritis, meningitis and myelitis
