Understanding Safe Sex

Oral Sex

STDs can be spread through oral sex, especially when the oral mucosa is weakened and cracked.  Sexually transmitted infections can be transferred from the genitalia to the mouth and vice versa. It is necessary to take protective measures such as condoms or oral barrier. However, the condoms designed for such are not widely available in Hong Kong.

Masturbation or Massage

Masturbation or massage is considered relatively safer. Blood, seminal fluid or vaginal discharge can still be transferred.

Mammary Intercourse

It is less likely to have direct contact with the blood, seminal fluid and vaginal discharge. However, such sexual activity generally lasts longer and the risk of getting an infection is usually overlooked.

Anal Sex

Unprotected anal sex is very risky in getting sexually transmitted or HIV infection. The anus does not release lubricating secretion and the tissues are relatively thin. It cannot withstand the vigorous frictions arising from anal intercourse, resulting in tears and cracks. Without the proper use of a condom designed for such sex, as there are not widely available in Hong Kong, the participants are susceptible to various STDs. At least one has to apply a generous amount of lubricants to lower the risk of wear and tear.

Vaginal sex

After putting on a condom, participants should avoid contact with partner’s vaginal discharge, the discharge before ejaculation, seminal fluid and blood, in order to lower the risk of getting an STD.

Use of sex toys

Sex toys may have the residue of body fluids from an infected person of STDs or HIV. Without proper cleaning, it puts the subsequent user at high risk.

Proper use of condoms

  • Use a brand new, unexpired, good quality and unbroken condom for each intercourse.
  • Not to use more than one condom at the same time as they rub against each other and break from friction.
  • Extreme heat causes damage to condoms. These should not be stored in a car.
  • After erection, wear a condom prior to sexual contact
  • Carefully squeeze the air out of the front of the condom, avoid applying too much pressure to break it. Leave the front space for seminal fluid to fill.
  • Unroll the condom to cover the whole penis.
  • After ejaculation and while the penis is still erect, hold tight the rim of the condom and pull the penis out.
  • Avoid further thrusting after ejaculation, to minimize the chance of leaking seminal fluid from the condom.
  • Changing of body position increase the chance of infection.
