Pityriasis versicolor

Pityriasis versicolor is a skin infection caused by a fungus malassezia species naturally found in the environment. It is a normal flora of human skin. After strenuous exercise without immediate drying, the damp and sweating body provides a humid breeding ground for the fungus to grow excessively, resulting an infection.

Spread of Infection

The usual way to get this infection is via the environment, direct contact with an infected person or a contaminated object. However, not all persons infected develop symptoms.

Symptoms

  • Round or oval-shaped patches of skin discoloration, usually on the areas of excessive sweating such as the face, chest, back, shoulders and armpits
  • Itching and stinging in the infected areas

Treatment

  • Shampoos – Pyrithoine Zinc or Selenium Sulfide
  • Topical Imidazoles – Ketoconzole
  • High recurrence rates, prophylaxis may be needed.
