Tinea

Tinea is a common fungal infection of the skin. It can affect various areas of the skin. Depending on the body parts and fungal type, the infection has different names, including tinea capitis, tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea manuum, tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), etc.

Spread of Infection

Tinea is highly contagious. Protected by a cyst wall, it can be spread in many direct and indirect ways. Infected persons, animals and contaminated objects are sources of infection. Humid climates provide the optimal breeding ground for the fungi to grow and thrive.

Symptoms

A tinea infection is characterized by a circular rash that is usually red and itchy.

  • Tinea capitis: hair loss, swellings and pus in the infected areas of the scalp, inflammation in severe cases
  • Tinea corporis: scaly red rash on the body, readily to spread to other body parts
  • Tinea cruris: scaly and itchy red rash on the skin of genitals, inner thighs and buttocks
  • Tinea manuum: peeling on the palm and the spaces between fingers; red rash on the back of the hand
  • Tinea pedis: peeling and cracking in the toe webs; scaly keratosis blisters on the soles; burning, stinging and itching on the infected areas
