Eczema

Eczema is a common skin disease which is not contagious. The rash mostly appears on the cheeks, skin around the lips, neck, inner sides of the limbs, abdominal skin folds, etc. Especially at the times of seasonal change, the condition gets worse and the affected skin becomes very itchy.

What triggers Eczema?

  • Genetic factors: sensitive skin that develops atopic dermatitis
  • Skin allergic reactions to allergens, such as dust, pollen, pet’s hair and dander
  • Food allergy such as seafood, milk, eggs and nuts
  • Temperature change, dry weather
  • Over washing, soap, detergents
  • Bacteria
  • Emotions
  • Wool
  • Home dust mite
  • Cigarettes

Pathogenesis of Eczema

  • Skin barrier defect FLG gene
  • Environmental
  • Immunologic responses in T cells, antigen processing inflammatory cytokines, host defense proteins
  • Allergen sensitivity
  • Infection

Symptoms

  • Itchiness
  • Red, swollen and dry skin with vesicle formation
  • Thickened and crusted skin
  • Bacterial infection and inflammation
  • In severe cases of eczema, oozing blisters and desquamation (skin flaking off)

General Advice

  • Use emollients liberally
  • Avoid scratching
  • Improve sleep quality and time
  • Avoid absences
  • Enhance communication in family
  • Breast feeding more than 6 months
